The 1980s: Challenging Times

Towards the end of the decade an agreement was announced with Detroit Diesel in the USA, changing fundamentally the Perkins representation in North America, and with ISM in Japan, giving Perkins access to small modern engines below the Peterborough power range. Agreements were also announced with Pegaso, Volvo Penta and Komatsu in the new era of collaboration and the continuing globalisation of the Perkins business. Within the Perkins traditional markets there were gradual changes, with a greater emphasis on industrial and generator set sectors and a reduction in truck engine sales as the market polarised towards larger vehicles and ‘own brand’ engine supply. Sales to Caterpillar, JCB and F G Wilson assumed significant levels.
